The Role of AI in Islamic Estate Planning: How ORIS Works

ORIS is our AI assistant that helps with family building, doctrine comparison, and scenario analysis — but it never touches the calculation engine.

The Architectural Boundary

ORIS (Obligation, Rights, Inheritance & Succession) is Wasiyat's AI advisory layer, powered by Anthropic's Claude. The most important thing to understand about ORIS is what it does NOT do: it never performs inheritance calculations, never enforces the bequest cap, never generates legal documents, and never issues religious rulings (fatwas). These functions are handled by a deterministic, rule-based calculation engine with full Quranic citation trails. This separation is a non-negotiable architectural principle.

What ORIS Actually Does

ORIS enhances the user experience in four ways: (1) Conversational Explorer — ask questions about Islamic inheritance in plain English and get context-aware answers based on your actual family structure. (2) Doctrine Comparison — see exactly how your inheritance shares differ across all six schools of thought, with explanations for each divergence. (3) Scenario Analysis — explore hypothetical family changes and see how shares would recalculate. (4) Document Migration — upload an existing will and let ORIS extract family members, assets, and identify Shariah compliance issues.

Why the Separation Matters

Islamic inheritance calculations must be deterministic and traceable. Every share assignment in Wasiyat references a specific Quranic verse or authenticated hadith. If AI were involved in the calculation process, it would be impossible to guarantee mathematical precision or provide reliable citation trails. The calculation engine uses exact fraction arithmetic (not floating-point) to ensure shares sum to exactly 1.0 across all family configurations.

Safety and Privacy Measures

ORIS automatically redacts personal identifiers (Aadhaar, PAN, phone numbers) before any data reaches the AI model. Every response includes a clear disclaimer that it is educational guidance, not a fatwa or legal advice. A circuit breaker pattern ensures that if the AI service becomes unavailable, all core platform features — calculations, document generation, the vault — continue working without interruption. Token usage and costs are tracked per query for transparency.

The Future of AI in Islamic Finance

AI has an important role to play in making Islamic estate planning accessible to the 200 million Muslims in India — most of whom have never created a will. By lowering the knowledge barrier through conversational guidance while maintaining strict computational integrity for the calculations themselves, platforms like Wasiyat can serve families who might otherwise never engage with estate planning at all.
